A sweat lodge is a native style ceremony that involves a dark tent like structure covered in blankets and built out of willow branches. When enter into this structure with the intention to heal and acknowledge the creator and be in the womb of Mother Earth. There is fire outside where rocks are heated then brought into the center of the lodge where they will be offered water and prayers creating a hot wet and cleansing atmosphere for healing and opening a connection to God/Creator/Great Spirit. Usually conducted by a wise man or woman and a helper who renders the fire.

Women and men’s lodges occur on different nights. A partner of an opposite gender can wait outside, or pick up or drop off and is welcome to eat with everyone after the ceremony closes and people come out of the lodge. Fire tenders for the lodges tend to be men, but stay outside for women’s lodge. Our traditional practice states that women having their menstrual cycle or “moon time” also be outside of the lodge as their body is doing its own ceremony for cleansing.

Bring a pot luck time for share and water. Women are encouraged to wear a dress or at least cover up to a modest degree.

It’s a non money exchange service to the community however it’s respectable to give a gift of medicine or herbs to the conductor of the lodge. Please discuss this with Hugh before attending.

Bring a towel and change of clothes.

This is a sober event and as much as many people use medicine in other lodges or ceremonies please show up sober and ready to pray for healing and help from the creator.
